Es un gran placer personal el haber podido entrevistar a uno de los más grandes Artistas Marciales de la Historia de Corea, el Gran Maestro JI HAN JAE 10º Dan, Fundador del Hapkido y del Sin Moo Hapkido. Fundador de la Korea Kido Association, Fundador de la Korea Hapkido Association, Fundador de la World Sin Moo Hapkido Association, Instructor-Jefe durante 20 años de los 300 Bodyguards del Pte. de Corea (General Park), protagonista y coreógrafo en de los films de Hong Kong Fist of Unicor, Ladys Kung Fu y Juego con la Muerte junto al famoso actor Bruce Lee. Maestro de los Grandes Maestros de Hapkido la actualidad  como Myung Kwang Shik, Bom So Han, Oh Se Lim.

De visita en España para impartir un Seminario Internacional el Doju-nim acepto a que lo entrevistara en mi casa, es mi deseo dar a conocer esta entrevista a la comunidad del Hapkido.

Doju-nim cree usted que el Hapkido de hoy día comparado con el Sung Moo Kwan original ¿es mejor, peor, diferente? 

Sung Moo Kwan es el Hapkido que yo deje en Corea, todas las escuelas de Hapkido son similares por que todas tienen la misma raíz. Mi estilo ahora es Sin Moo Hapkido si alguien quiere conocer mis técnicas debe practicar Sin Moo Hapkido.

¿Hay mucha diferencia de su primera escuela de Hapkido Sung Moo Kwan al Sin Moo Hapkido actual?

Sung Moo Kwan es el Hapkido que practica todo el mundo, Sin Moo Hapkido es similar pero con técnicas de meditación “Ki”, la gente en Corea no conoce estas técnicas por que yo comencé a enseñarlas más tarde.

¿Si hay un solo fundador por que hay varios 10º Dan a nivel mundial?

No los hay,  sólo yo poseo el 10º Dan.

Pero hay famosos Maestros de Hapkido que ostentan en la actualidad el 10º Dan.

No les pertenece, el 10º Dan sólo lo puede llevar el creador del Arte y ese fui yo.

Por que la mayoría de Maestros en Corea consideran a Choi Yong Sul como fundador del Hapkido.

Por que yo le entregue el Hapkido.

¿Y por que hizo esto, si usted fue el creador?.

Por respeto a mi Maestro.

¿En que año fundó usted el Hapkido?

En 1.957

¿Qué edad tenía usted entonces?

Unos 21 años.

Hapki Yu Kwon Sul y Hapkido ¿es lo mismo técnicamente?.

No.

El Maestro Hee Youg Kim en su libro “Hapkido Bible” dice que el Yawara japonés de Choi se convirtió en Yu Kwon Sul por que se le añadieron técnicas coreanas, ¿que técnicas?, o ¿simplemente se coreanizo el nombre?

El Yu Kwon Sul ¡no tenía técnicas coreanas!. Yu Kwon Sul es lo mismo que Yawara sólo cambia el nombre del japonés al coreano, este nombre lo cambió Suh Bok Sop. 

Algunos Maestros dicen que Choi Yong Sul estudió Taekyon  e introdujo estas técnicas en el Yawara ¿es esto cierto?, si es así con quien estudió.

Choi no estudió ningún arte coreano.

Todos los estilos tienen un linaje coreano con el Taekyon, también el Hapkido, usted introdujo estas técnicas, por tanto ¿se puede decir que es usted quien coreanizo el Yu Kwon Sul de Choi?.

Yo estudié el Yawara de Choi, después estudié Saramgdo con el Taoista Lee Do-Sa, yo junte las dos Artes y así fundé el Hapkido.

Usted introdujo las armas al Hapkido provenientes del Saramgdo-Taekyon ¿todas o la espada, cuerda, cuchillo tienen otro linaje marcial?

Todas las técnicas de Armas provienen del Saramgdo que yo estudié con el Taoista Lee. No es correcto llamar Samrangdo-Taekyon por que Taekyon o Taekyryong es sólo una de las partes del Arte del Samragdo. Saramgdo posee patadas, defensa personal. Armas y técnicas de desarrollo del poder del “Ki”.

¿Choi enseñaba técnicas con armas de origen japonés?.

No. Yo creo que él sabia técnicas de armas japonesas pero yo nunca le vi entrenarlas, tampoco el nunca me enseño estas técnicas.

¿Por que hubo un distanciamiento entre usted y su Maestro Choi?

Yo cree la 1º organización para las Artes Marciales Coreanas la Korea Kido Association y entregue a mi Maestro Choi la Presidencia, el Maestro Choi coloco a un alumno suyo en un cargo por encima de mí y esto no me gustó.

En Sin Moo Hapkido no existe el combate, ¿por qué?.

En Hapkido ¡todo es combate!, si tu eres policía y necesitas reducciones “tienes reducciones”, si eres militar y necesitas el combate de cuchillo “tienes técnicas de cuchillo”, si eres mujer y necesitas la defensa personal sin la fuerza “tienes técnicas con la fuerza del oponente” ¡todo es combate!, lo que pasa que en Hapkido está todo junto.

¿Quienes son sus alumnos más destacados en la actualidad en el Sin Moo Hapkido?

¡Ninguno!, todos son importantes.

¿Cómo ha visto a sus alumnos españoles en el Seminario?

Son muy respetuosos y con una excelente técnica, he disfrutado mucho en este Seminario y te lo debo a ti, quiero agradecerte tus esfuerzos y dedicación hacia mi y el Sin Moo Hapkido.

It is a great personal pleasure for me to have been able to interview one of the greatest martial artists in Korean history, Grand Master  Ji Han Jae, 10th Dan. Founder of Hapkido and Sin Moo Hapkido. Founder of the Korea Kido Association, Founder of the World Sin Moo Hapkido Association, head instructor for 20 years of the Korean Presidential Bodyguards (under General Park), actor and choreographer in the Hong Kong films Fist of Unicor, Ladys Kung Fu and Game of Death, the last one alongside the famous actor Bruce Lee. Patriarch of today's Hapkido Grandmasters, such as Myung Kwang Shik, Bom So Han, Oh Se Lim, etc.

While visiting Spain to host an international seminar, Doju-nim Ji agreed for me to interview him in my home. It is my desire to make this interview available to the Hapkido community.

Dojunim, How would you compare today's Hapkido with the original Sung Moo Kwan style? Is it better, worse, or just different?

Sung Moo Kwan was the Hapkido that I left behind in Korea. All Hapkido kwans are similar because they all share the same root. My current style is Sin Moo Hapkido. Those who want to learn my techniques must practice Sin Moo Hapkido.

Is there a lot of difference between your first kwan, Sung Moo Kwan, and today's Sin Moo Hapkido?

Sung Moo Kwan Hapkido is what is practiced all over the world. Sin Moo Hapkido is similar, but it includes Ki meditation techniques. These techniques are unknown in Korea because I only began teaching them later.

If there is only one founder, why are there several 10th dans around the world?
There are no other 10th dans. I am the only one.

But there are famous Hapkido masters today who claim to be 10th dans.

The only person who can hold the rank of 10th dan is the person who created the art. I am that person.

Why do most Hapkido masters in Korea consider Choi Yong Sul to be the founder of Hapkido?

Because I presented Hapkido to him.

And why did you do that, if you were the creator of the art?

I did that out of respect for my master.

In what year did you found Hapkido?

In 1957.

How old were you then?

I was 21.

Are Hapki Yu Kwon Sul and Hapkido the same on the technical level?

No.

Master Hee Youn Kim, in his book "Hapkido Bible", says that the Choi's Japanese Yawara became Yu Kwon Sul because Choi added Korean techniques to it. What were these techiques? Or, did Choi simply "Koreanize" the name of the art?

There are no Korean techniques in Yu Kwon Sul! and Yawara are the same art. The only difference is that Yu Kwon Sul is a Korean name for the art. Suh Bok Sop changed the name from Yawara to Yu Kwon Sul.

Some masters maintain that Choi Yong Sul studied Taekyon and that he introduced Taekyon technique into Yawara. Is that correct? If so, who did Choi study Taekyon with?

Choi never studied any Korean art.

All styles have a lineage from the Korean art of Taekyon, including Hapkido. You introduced these (Taekyon) techniques into Hapkido. Therefore, can we say that it was you who "Koreanized" Choi's Yu Kwon Sul?

I studied Yawara under Choi. Later, I studied Saramgdo under the Taoist Lee Do-Sa. I combined these two arts to create Hapkido.

You introduced the weapons of Saramgdo-Taekyon into Hapkido. Did you include all of the weapons? Or, do the sword, rope and knife come from another martial arts lineage?

All of the weapons techniques come from the Saramgdo that I studied under Taoist Lee. It is incorrect to use the term "Samrangdo-Taekyon" because Taekyon or Taekyryong is just one of the elements of Samragdo. Saramgdo includes kicks, self defense, weapons and Ki power development techniques.

Did Choi teach any Japanese weapons techniques?
No. I think that he knew some Japanese weapons techniques, but I never saw him practice them, nor did he ever teach me any of these techniques.

Why was there a parting of the ways between you and your master, Choi?

I created the first Korean martial arts organization, the Korean Kido Association. I presented the presidency of that organization to my master, Choi. Master Choi put another of his students in charge of the organization, over me, and that displeased me.

There is no combat in Sin Moo Hapkido. Why is that?

Everything in Hapkido is combat! If you are a policeman and you need restraining techniques, you have them. If you are a soldier and you need knife-fighting techniques, you have them. If you are a woman and you need self defense techniques that do not rely on strength, you have techniques that utilize the strength of your attacker! All of this is combat! It is simply that in Hapkido, all of these techniques come together.

Who are the seniormost Sin Moo students today?
There are no "seniormost" students! All of my students are important.

What are your impressions of the Spanish students in the seminar?

They are very respectful, and their technique is excellent. This seminar has been quite a pleasure for me, and I owe it to you. I would like to thank you for your effforts and for your dedication to me and to Sin Moo Hapkido.
